Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these medications should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
